Nearly all of Lp(a) is genetic. Although lifestyle has little effect on these levels, it does improve overall heart health.

4. Every test is identical.

Numbers aren't always comparable because different labs use different units and methodologies. Context is important.

5. It isn't a known risk factor.

Aortic valve disease and plaque accumulation are directly caused by elevated Lp(a).

6. Levels fluctuate frequently

After childhood, they remain stable. It remains high if it is high once.

7. There is nothing you can do.

Although there are currently few options, there are potent new medications in late-stage trials. Keep yourself informed.

8. Only important in later life

Since high Lp(a) can hasten heart disease decades before symptoms manifest, risk begins early.
