Monsoon Health Alert: Doctor Warns of Hidden Dangers & Shares Important Safety Tips

Dr. Vikram Vora, Medical Director at International SOS (India), told HT Lifestyle how the rainy season can be a source of infection and what simple measures we can take to protect ourselves.

The monsoon months in India provide welcome relief from the scorching summer heat but they also provide many hidden health dangers that many of us disregard. From flooded roads to food and water contamination, this is the time of year when infections, viral fevers and skin problems reach their peak.

“The warm and wet environment during the rains creates ideal conditions for bacteria, viruses, and fungi to spread. From gastrointestinal issues to mosquito-borne diseases, monsoon illnesses can range from mildly inconvenient to seriously dangerous. Prevention and awareness are the best shields,” says Dr. Vora.

⚠️ Typical Monsoon Illnesses to be vigilant for

When you know what illnesses to expect you can take preventive measures:

Waterborne Infections - Diarrhoea, cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis A & E are all common due to the increased number of people consuming contaminated water and unhygienic foods.

Vector-Borne Diseases – Dengue, malaria, chikungunya, and Japanese encephalitis rise sharply with stagnant water that breeds mosquitoes.

Airborne Illnesses – Humidity encourages fungi and mould growth, triggering asthma, cold, flu, and respiratory infections.

Skin Infections – Athlete’s foot, ringworm, and bacterial skin issues are common due to staying wet for long hours.

Leptospirosis - This severe bacterial infection can be contracted from walking barefoot in the puddles/flood water with rat pee in it.

Monsoon Health Tips: Do's and Don'ts

✔️ Do's

Drinking only boiled/ filtered water.

Washing your hands regularly by soap.

Consume hot, freshly cooked, homemade food - do not consume street foods.

Keep nails trimmed and clean.

Use mosquito nets, insect repellent and wear long sleeves.

Shower every day, dry your feet well, wear breathable footwear.

❌ Don’ts

Don’t let water stagnate in coolers, pots, or bins.

Don’t eat raw fruits or cut salads sold in the open.

Don’t walk barefoot in floodwaters.

Don’t ignore warning signs like persistent fever, body ache, diarrhoea, or vomiting.

Don’t self-medicate—consult a doctor.

🚜 Supercharge Your Immunity This Rainy Season

When it comes to hygiene, there’s only so much you can do! What you eat can affect your immunity during the rainy season. Always attempt to add foods such as those listed below (that can boost immunity) to your dishes.

Ginger & turmeric - These spices are delicious and can also help us combat infections.

Citrus fruits such as oranges, amla or gooseberry, and lemon that are high in Vitamin C.

Warm soups, herbal teas, and homemade kadhas for relief from coughs and colds.

Light and home-cooked meals to fill your belly instead of oily or deep fried snacks.

🚑 When to Go See a Doctor

If you are experiencing anything like, high fever, rashes on your skin, persistent vomiting, extreme fatigue, or unexplainable body pains, go see a doctor immediately..

Delaying treatment in monsoon illnesses can make recovery more difficult.

Final Word

Monsoon is beautiful, but it demands extra care. With a little vigilance—clean water, safe food, dry clothes, and mosquito control—you can enjoy the rains without falling sick. As Dr. Vora reminds us:

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, especially with the rains."

Be safe, be dry, and stay strong with your immunity during the rain! 🌿💧
